Chapter 11

Whitney gasped as the lumpy mass of the wyrm butted against her, rolling her sideways into a tunnel opening. She fell five feet and then crashed into the tunnel’s wall as it curved right.

She sighed with relief. If the tunnel had been one of the bottomless pits, she would be dead right now.

“Whitney!” she heard Karim scream.

“In here,” she shouted back. Before she could stand, she saw Karim jump onto the ledge above her. He had a panicked looked in his eyes.

“I thought…” he trailed off. She knew what he had thought. He had thought she was dead.

She had to keep in mind that it wasn’t only her life she was risking in her quest to save Moms. Would she be able to forgive herself if something happened to Karim? At the same time, she couldn’t give up on her Moms. She needed to be more careful. Not only with herself, but in making sure that nothing happened to Karim. Although he acted like an annoying worrywart, she thought that maybe he had a good reason to be one.

“I’m fine.” She brushed red dirt and slime off her legs as she stood. The ledge that Karim stood on was eye-level and she easily pulled her self onto it. “But maybe we should stick closer together?”

“That would be nice,” Karim said.

They weren’t halfway across the cavern. Her instincts told her that the best approach was to get across it using the most direct route.

As they navigated the cavern, they developed a rhythm. One of them always remained in a stable cross-section while the other passed a narrow ledge. They made sure to call out tunnels that were shallow and safe to fall into and went out of their way to avoid any cluster of tunnels that led to bottomless pits.

Three-fourths of the way across the cavern, they hit the most dangerous part. Every tunnel led to a deadly drop and the ledges between the openings were miniscule. Some of the openings even overlapped, leaving no ledge to cross.

Whitney mapped the path they would take. They needed to go slightly out of their way, but were only five tunnel openings away from their destination.

“Run!” Karim yelled.

Whitney turned to see a cave wyrm barreling right at them. Unfortunately, there was nowhere to run.

“What are you doing?” He nudged her forward, but she didn’t move.

“Get ready to jump.” She spun him around so that they both faced the incoming worm.

“No way,” Karim stammered.

“We might get lucky, and it might turn.” She bent her knees preparing to jump. “If it doesn’t, this is the only option.”

The wyrm didn’t turn.

“Now!” Whitney grabbed Karim by the waist, throwing him upward as he jumped, giving him an extra bit of height.

Whitney sprang into the air and the wyrm rammed into both of them. She had thought it might feel like getting hit by a car, but because of the wyrm’s pointed head, it felt more like getting scooped up by giant hands. They rolled over the wyrm’s head and onto its knobby back.
